Luke Kenny - Biography

Though Luke Kenny has been around for a while, and has assumed various roles in his life, after his role in Rock On (2008) he is immediately associated with the keyboardist that he played in the film. Some people still associate him with Channel V. Few know of his rock band. And there are even fewer who know that he has Directed a feature film! Luke was born in Kolkata on 14th June 1969, after which his family moved to Mumbai. He has a varied family tree, owing to which he is Irish-British-Italian, with an Indian twist! A great and passionate dancer, Luke was a part of Arshad Warsi’s dance troupe as a chorus dancer and Associate Choreographer for 2 years. He worked as a DJ for a while, before breaking into the public’s eye in 1995 when he became a VJ on Channel V. 3 years later he went to become the head of Music Programming and Artist Relations for the channel. He continued to remain at that post until 2008. That was not all that he did with Channel V. In 2005 he resurfaced in a segment called Luke’s After Hours. It featured tracks that he picked; his choice of music videos and fantastic taste in music was appreciated a great deal. The show had a huge loyal viewership and high TRPs. It stayed on air for 3 years. Does the word Berzerker ring a bell? It is an Australian industrial death metal band, founded by Luke himself. He is the vocalist of the band. The band’s 1st album-The Berzerker released in 2000, and the latest one-The Reawakening came out in 2008. Luke has acted in 2 films: • Bombay Boys (1998). He shared screen space with Naveen Andrews, Naseeruddin Shah, Rahul Bose et al. • After 10 years he appeared in Rock On (2008). He played the character of Rob, keyboardist of the Rock band, Magic. The film was a hit, and so was the character. But he wasn’t satisfied with merely acting in films. He Directed and Produced 13th Floor, a feature film starring Purab Kohli and Sandhya Mridul. It has a running time of 80 minutes, and is about two characters in an elevator. Apparently it was India’s first digitally shot and released movie. The film was selected for several International Film Festivals, though it was released in India in select theatres, and played only for a week. Luke has also 3 Directed music videos “Dil”, “Humein jeene do” and “Kyon”. He has to his credit a weekly column titled “If I may say so” in the Hindustan Times supplement HT Café, which appears every Friday. He is the Contributing Editor for Rolling Stone India (magazine devoted to music, politics and popular culture). He writes the column “Luke Box” and a live music column called “Gig-a-bites”.
